# Tool Use Etiquette

## Usage

Except for the automotive lift, right now all tools are basically first come, first served. For most tools this isn't a problem. Occasionally some of the more popular tools can get more than one person trying to use them, but in that case both members usually discuss their projects and can work out how best to share.

If you'll be using a tool for a long time, like say laser cutting a piece for several hours. It's good etiquette to post on the Google Group letting people know what you'll be using and for how long. This lets other members plan around you and avoid frustrations.

## Broken Tools

Stuff happens, even when you're careful. We get it. If a tool is broken, please email <tools@desmoinesmaker.space> to let the stewards know.

If you broke it, please own up to it. People may not be happy, but they'll respect you for admitting it. People will be way more upset if they come in and discover something is broken on their own. Besides, the Tool Stewards can't fix it until they know about it.

# FAQ

## I want to be trained on a tool/area, who do I contact?

Please email <tools@desmoinesmaker.space> to schedule training. Include what tools you would like to get trained on as well as your availability. Be prepared to pay the yearly tool usage fee. You can go to [our website](https://desmoinesmaker.space/collections/all) to pay the fee, or pay in person by leaving it in the drop box in an envelope with your name and what area it's for.

## Are these all the tools you have?

Nope. This is only a list of the major ones. Plenty of tools aren't listed here, either because we haven't documented them yet or because they're too small to enumerate. If you're wondering about something that you don't see here, email <tools@desmoinesmaker.space> and ask.

## I haven't heard back about my training request, what do I do?

If you don't hear back after a few days, feel free to send out another email followup. Sometimes emails are overlooked or the stewards are too busy to respond at the time they receive it. Please be patient though, all of our stewards are volunteers.

## I broke a tool, what do I do?

Please email <tools@desmoinesmaker.space> with details about what you broke and how it broke. The sooner you report it the sooner it can be fixed. # Prusa i3 MK3S

## About

The Prusa i3 MK3S was the culmination of the efforts of Josef Prusa, Prusa Research, and other contributors to the RepRap project over the past decade. It set the standard of hobby 3D printers in terms of reliability and ease of use. A great deal of the reliability and support come from the fact that Prusa Research utilize literally hundreds of Prusa i3s to manufacture and iterate on their design.

As of 2026, Area 515's i3 MK3S printers had printed more than 12 kilometers of filament!

## Slicing

We use [PrusaSlicer](https://www.prusa3d.com/prusaslicer/) and the built-in profiles for this machine. The [Prusa Knowledge Base](https://help.prusa3d.com/en/category/prusaslicer_204) has additional information on configuration settings and advanced use.

### Prusa Connect and PrusaLink

[Prusa Connect and PrusaLink](https://help.prusa3d.com/article/prusa-connect-and-prusalink-explained_302608) are wireless options for saving and printing to the Prusa printers at Area 515. PrusaLink is a local network solution for loading and printing wirelessly and each printer has its local IP address and login information posted in the space. Members get access to the local network at Area 515 when they join. Prusa Connect is a full cloud suite which requires members create a prusa3d account and get invited to Area 515's team; this is completed during training.

### Saving to SD Card

There is a computer in the 3d printing room with an SD card reader for users to save files directly to the printer instead of using PrusaLink or Prusa Connect, if preferred. The SD card reader on the 3D printing computer is old and may require you to save the file twice. Please keep this in mind when you use this machine.

## Use

### Operation

The LCD menus are easy to navigate on this printer, and it does most of the work for you. Clicking the encoder wheel in will get you into the menu from the status screen, and rotating it will allow you to navigate the menus.

### Build Plate

Always consult the [filament material guide](https://help.prusa3d.com/filament-material-guide) to know which sheet to use with which filament. There are printed guides at the space stacked with the build-plate holder. Using the incorrect filament will permanently damage the sheet.

### Abrasive Materials

Abrasive materials, such as filaments with carbon fiber or glow-in-the-dark additives must only be printed on a printer with a hardened nozzle. The i3 MK3S does not have a hardened nozzle and cannot print abrasive materials.

### Changing Filament

If filament from someone else is currently loaded, navigate to the unload filament option, then select the type of filament you will be loading. Wait for the hotend to heat up and click in the stick to unload when prompted. Be sure to insert the end of the filament into the retainer on the spool. Insert the new filament, carefully feeding in until the extruder gears grab it. Follow the remaining instructions on the controller to complete the load.

If the printer starts empty, start from the step where you insert the filament. It will then prompt you to select the filament you are loading. Wait for it to heat up and then proceed.

## Troubleshooting

### Poor Bed Adhesion

Typically when there is poor bed adhesion, this means the buildplate is dirty. The likely culprit is finger oils from handling the plate and removing prints. The most effective way to solve this with smooth and textured PEI plates is by washing and scrubbing in the sink with dish soap. Make sure to fully dry the plate before returning it to the printer, and be careful to not get any contaminants on it after washing.

&#x20;With textured PEI specifically, a thin coating of PVA glue (disappearing purple works well) is generally required for most materials. The most consistent way to apply this is by spreading several streaks over the surface, not too thick, and then, using a wet paper towel, evenly distributing the glue over the whole surface. The glue will lather slightly, becoming slightly white and opaque, before drying clear. This coating typically lasts at least a month's worth of printing if kept clean.

Ensure the correct build plate is chosen: smooth1 or textured1. The build plates have 1st layer z-offsets created by the tool stewards. Do not adjust the 1st layer z-offset without approval from a tool steward.


# MK4S and MMU3

## Approved Materials

Due to the loading and unloading process being very sensitive, the following materials **ARE PROHIBITED**:

* Flexible Filament
* Glow in the Dark Filament
* Filled Filaments (wood, CF, metal, carbon fiber, etc)
* "B" grade filament from extrusion transitions

Additionally, the list of approved filaments is **limited to**:

* ABS/ASA, PLA, and PETG from Hatchbox, Overture, Push Plastic, 3D Fuel, IC3D, Prusament, ColorFabb, Polymaker, Essentium, HSP Layer Line, and MatterHackers.

Exceptions may be approved with a steward's permission.

## Slicing

### Multi Material Slicing

Visit <https://help.prusa3d.com/product/mmu3/multi-material-slicing_881> to learn more about multi material slicing. Members are recommended to use multi-part models so that individual parts can be easily colored. Meshes with distinct faces can also be easily colored with the smart fill multi-material tool in the slicer.

When printing with one material, select the MMU3 profile and use only one filament, the wipe tower will not be included in the slice.

When printing with multiple materials, select the MMU3 machine profile and choose multiple materials.

## Use

The MMU is prone to jamming with certain filaments. Many issues can be avoided by using good quality filament with minimal moisture content. Consider drying PLA/PETG for a few hours before printing to ensure jam-free operation.

Abrasive materials, such as filaments with carbon fiber or glow-in-the-dark additives must only be printed on a printer with a hardened nozzle. The MK4S = MMU3 has a standard flow non-hardened nozzle and cannot print abrasive materials.

### Loading/Ejecting Filament

Most of the time when using the MMU, you will be either using the `Preload to MMU` menu option or the `Eject from MMU` menu option. `Load to nozzle` and `Unload filament` are often unnecessary, as the printer will load and unload filament to/from the nozzle when it needs to.

#### Loading Filament

To load filament, orient your spool of filament so that its hub (the hole in the middle of the spool) is parallel to you and the filament would unwind downward. Screw the filament spool holder into the hub with the gears on the right. Place the spool you would like to load onto the appropriate position in the auto-loader and then feed the filament into the tube below the holder. The weighted arm of the auto-loader will raise and gently bounce at the top of its motion. Feed the filament until it is near the MMU. Then, on the printer, select the `Preload to MMU` option in the menu. Choose the position of your filament and in the menu click to cycle through to the type of filament you are using. When you are ready, scroll to the bottom and select the command to submit changes. The MMU will then move the requested slot and be ready for loading. Gently feed filament into the tube until you feel the MMU grab onto it, and then let go and wait for the MMU to finish the loading process. Use a light touch for this, it can be difficult to tell when the MMU has grabbed the filament otherwise. If you have selected multiple filaments the MMU will automatically move to the next position.

#### Ejecting Filament

Select the `Eject from MMU` option in the menus and then select the material you will be ejecting so the MMU can preheat. Once it is done preheating, the MMU will move the selector out of the way of the filament slot and push filament out of the front of the MMU. Cut the end of the filament off so it doesn't get stuck in the tube and then retract the filament by pulling on it from the spool end.

The MMU will preheat when ejecting in case the filament you would like to eject is loaded to the nozzle. Sometimes jams happen or the MMU looses track of where filament is, so it will always do this to stay safe.

## Troubleshooting

MMU errors result in the print getting paused. The printer will keep the bed at temperature until you return to resolve the issue so the part won't delaminate. The extruder will be turned off to prevent further issues though.

### MMU Jams

If filament jams in the feed tubes the MMU may not be able to retract it. In this case, the coupling on the MMU may need to be removed to resolve the jam. Please report a jam to the 3D printing stewards.

### Filament breaks in feed tubes

Most issues like this can be avoided by using good quality filament that has been properly dried. PLA is particularly susceptible to cracking when exposed to the air for long periods of time.&#x20;

Filament stuck in the guide tubes going into the MMU can be removed by first ejecting the filament in that tube, and then feeding another material like ABS, PETG, or nylon into the tube to eject any leftover pieces of filament.

Filament stuck in the feed tube going from the MMU to the nozzle will require some disassembly of the printer. Please contact a 3D printing steward for help with this.

### MMU Error Codes

Prusa's website has a full set of troubleshooting guides on the MMU3's error codes. If the error requires maintenance or tools, please consult a steward before proceeding.

The enclosure allows for printing filaments which print better at high temperatures. The enclosure is not actively heated and can only maintain around 30 degrees Celsius. This will help with warping on PETG but may fail to print ABS and ASA parts without warping. One of the doors should be left open for PLA.

### Failed prints

The high flow nozzle and core X-Y motion is designed for modern filaments with additives and temperatures which allow for fast printing at high volume. If you do not have a high flow filament and are having trouble with failed prints use the Structural profile, reduce max volumetric rate, and reduce temperature to the lower range of the filament. Ask a tool steward for help if prints continue to fail.

Ensure the top vent is closed for materials which require a heated chamber. Ensure the vent is open for PLA.

The glue will lather slightly, becoming slightly white and opaque, before drying clear. This coating typically lasts at least a month's worth of printing if kept clean.

### Failed prints

The high flow nozzle and core X-Y motion is designed for modern filaments with additives and temperatures which allow for fast printing at high volume. If you do not have a high flow filament and are having trouble with failed prints use the Structural profile, reduce max volumetric rate, and reduce temperature to the lower range of the filament. Ask a tool steward for help if prints continue to fail.

## Slicing

We use [PrusaSlicer](https://www.prusa3d.com/prusaslicer/) and custom profiles for this machine. Currently these profiles are only available on the 3D printing computer. When slicing, make sure you select the Rostock MAX V4 physical machine profile.

### Uploading to printer (from PrusaSlicer)

After slicing, a button will appear next to the export button for saving directly to the printer over the network. If the printer is on and responding via the web interface you can use this to upload the sliced file directly to the printer.

### Operation

The printer is controlled via web browser. While connected to the internet at the space, navigate to  `rostockmax.local/` to access the control interface.

The web interface may not be accessible in the manner on android devices. It is possible to direct connect via the IP of the Duet, though that is outside the scope of this guide.

## Troubleshooting

### Can't connect via web interface.

If the printer doesn't respond when trying to connect, try power cycling it if possible. If this occurs during a print, be patient, most disconnects will be resolved shortly after they happen. If you need to cancel a print while the web interface is not responding, turning off the printer will cause the print to stop and not resume on power up. Please restore power to the machine shortly afterwards so the hotend doesn't jam.

### Parts won't stick

Try cleaning the bed with IPA and a paper towel, being careful to not get fingerprints on the bed. If this doesn't work please contact a 3D printing steward.

## Description

Our Lead CNC started life as a kit from OpenBuilds, but has since been upgraded into a much sturdier and beefier machine. It now uses HGR linear rails and ballscrews, making it much faster, quieter, and more accurate. The spindle installed uses standard ER20 collets, and is capable of holding 1/4", 1/8", or 1/16" shank tools. ([ask a steward](mailto:tools@desmoinesmaker.space) for more info). The spindle RPM is computer controlled and ranges from \~10,000-24,000 RPM. OpenBuilds Control software is what sends the gcode commands to the machine.

For beginners, we recommend using VCarve for toolpath generation. We have a makerspace edition that allows our members to download a copy of VCarve onto their home machines. With the makerspace edition, members can do everything except generate the actual gcode files. To do that, the VCarve files have to be transferred to a computer at the makerspace, and the gcode can be generated there.

The work area for this machine has increased to 49.25x48.875x6.625" (1252x1242x170mm). Z clearance over the spoiler board is now 6 5/8" when the Z axis is fully retracted. Maximum material height will be less based on cutting depth, bit length, etc.

## Troubleshooting

### "G-code motion target exceeds machine travel" error

This error may be accompanied by an "G-code locked out during alarm or jog state" error. Check the Console tab in OpenBulds Control for more info.

If this happens while running a program, it likely means that your workpiece/toolpath is too close to the machine extents. To solve this, you will either need to move your workpiece location, or edit your toolpath to not get as close to the machine extents. You can edit the retract/clearance heights in VCarve/Fusion if the Z axis is what's triggering the issue, otherwise you will need to rearrange the vectors/model(s) in VCarve/Fusion.

If this error occurs during probing a tool in the Z axis, the starting position for the probing move is likely too high. Jog the Z axis up small amounts until the Z probe move completes successfully.

If this error happens during an X or Y probing move, the workpiece is too close to the X or Y extremes. You will either need to move your workpiece or manually set X and/or Y zero by sight or another method.


# Piranha

## Description

The Piranha from Next Wave Automation is a relatively small but sturdy CNC router. The spindle installed uses standard ER11 collets, and with the collets provided it is capable of holding 1/4" and 1/8" shank tools, though other sizes are available if required ([ask a steward](mailto:tools@desmoinesmaker.space) for more info). The spindle RPM is electronically controlled and variable from \~0-12,000 RPM.

VCarve is used for toolpath generation, though it is compatible with other solutions, such as Fusion 360. [Ask a steward](mailto:tools@desmoinesmaker.space) if you would like to use something else.

## Description

We have 2 Full Spectrum laser cutter/engravers. Each one uses a 40 watt CO2 laser tube. The laser beam is in the infrared portion of the spectrum.

Lasers can reliably cut through plywood up to 1/8" thick. (Slightly more if cutting solid wood.)

Each laser bed is 20" x 12".

## Use

Lasers are operated via Retina Engrave 3D software. It is installed on the Laser Area computer, but...&#x20;

The software can also be installed and run on any Windows machine that is on the Area 515 WiFi network. The required version is no longer being updated. The last release was version 4.430 and it [may be downloaded here on the Full Spectrum website](https://fsl3d.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/4411446615195-RetinaEngrave-3D-Software-Download).

Power and Speed settings for various materials cannot be listed here since laser tubes slowly lose power over their lifetimes. (Therefore the settings that work for a material in January may or may not work for the same material in July.)

Please see the Power vs Speed charts on top of each machine to learn the current state of each laser tube. (Power vs Speed charts list the date they were made, and new ones are made on a strict schedule of whenever-the-Stewards-get-around-to-it. They are done on 1/8" Baltic Birch plywood.)&#x20;

### Baltic Birch Plywood

The Stewards try to keep a small supply of quality 1/8" Baltic Birch, 20" x 12" panels for members to purchase. They can be found on the labeled shelf beneath the lasers. Please put money in the metal lock box on the right side underneath the lasers. &#x20;

Any materials found on the wider set of shelves on the right is free for anyone to use without charge. Likewise, if you have any left over material bigger than about 4" x 4", you can put that on those shelves for others to use.

# Emco Maximat Super 11 Lathe

## Description

The Maximat Super 11, manufactured by the Austrian company Emco, is a capable little lathe. While being similar in size to many Atlas and Craftsman hobby lathes, the Maximat is sturdier and equipped with more creature comforts than its counterparts. Spindle speed is dictated by two levers and two motor speeds for easy switching between 8 speeds, and it comes standard with a gearbox for feed selection. It also has a dedicated feed rod and leadscrew, and power crossfeed with simple feed direction selector.

Our machine is the metric variant, so all the micrometer collars are graduated in millimeters, and the gearbox is setup for metric feeds and screw pitches. As a side effect, despite including a thread dial, our machine can not easily cut an inch thread since the thread dial only works for metric pitches. The spindle nose is a D1-4 camlock with a MT4 bore, and the tailstock has an MT2 bore. We have an AXA sized quick change toolpost mounted on the compound.

## Use

This tool requires more training than the average tool at the Area515. If you have experience with machine tools, much of this training may be skipped if the required skills are demonstrated to a steward. This process still requires scheduling a training session with a steward.

If you do not have experience with machine tools, message a steward and they can work with you for training. This process will involve some self-study time before getting on the machine with a steward's guidance. Due to the amount of knowledge required to operate this tool, this process may take a few weeks depending on scheduling availability and your study speed.

## Using the Thread Dial

If you are turning a thread expressed in TPI or with an inch pitch, once the half nut lever is engaged, it can not be disengaged. If it is disengaged for any reason, the existing thread must be picked up again by realigning the tool with the exisiting thread.

The dial position column denotes what gear on the dial engages with the leadscrew for a given pitch. The numbers in the cell correspond with the numbers on the dial face that the half nut lever can be engaged on to continue a thread. If a standard metric pitch is not listed on this table, the position 16 gear should be engaged with the leadscrew, and the half nut lever can be engaged on any number on the face.

Way oil is to be applied on sliding components via the labeled oil can. Any excess should be cleaned up. All that is required is a thin film to slide on, excess can catch chips and dust, causing abrasive buildup and excess wear.

Grease is applied via a grease pen included with the lathe. The grease pen has a plunger that is depressed to dispense grease into the grease fittings. The grease fittings have a mating taper and spring-loaded ball valve to retain the grease. It is important to ensure the grease pen and grease fitting mate properly to inject grease. If improperly aligned, grease will spill out. Be sure to clean up excess grease.

# spectraLIGHT CNC Mill

## Description

The spectraLIGHT is a mini mill from Sherline contained in an enclosure and adapted to CNC. It uses specialized Morse 1 taper collets that hold tools up to 1/4". It can hold tools with a larger shank (up to 1/2"), as well as a drill chuck and other tooling (such as a fly cutter), via an external thread on the spindle. The spindle is electronically controlled and variable from \~0-10,000 RPM

VCarve can be used for toolpath generation, though Fusion360 is recommended for greater flexibility.

## Use

Never change the blade unless you are sure you know what you are doing. Here are the steps that need to be taken each time:

1.Should remove guards, move all the guides out above and below the table and de-tension the blade.

2.Remove and place new blade on. Set correct tension making sure it is not touching any guides(they should far for blade). Check blade is square to table and table is set flat.

3.Adjust tracking on the wheels and then set back ceramic guide to just touch back of the blade.

4.Put side guards back on making sure the whole assembly is right behind the gullet of the blade.

5.Set inside guides to just past touching blade, and set outside guides to the thickness of a dollar bill away.

6.Ensure blade is moving smoothly and guides are parallel to blade as they will try to twist when you tighten them.

7.Place guards back on and test run blade.

8.Once stopped run a parallel test and set fence to adjust for drift of blade.

9.If a specialty blade once you are done using remove and put a more standard blade back on.
